Readies a block against the next blow aimed at you: you take it on your shield. You can parry, dodge or block anything without saying so - which one you reach for is decided for you - but calling it makes a block far likelier, and better when it comes. Blocking needs a shield, and it is the strongest of the three, which is what carrying one buys you and what a two-handed weapon costs you. It lasts for one blow and costs nothing.
