Account FAQ

Signing up, verifying your email, resetting a password, characters, and what happens if you close your account.

Do I need an account to play?

Yes, and it is free. An account holds your characters and your settings, and it is what lets you log in from the browser one day and Mudlet the next and find the same character where you left it.

What is the difference between an account and a character?

One account, many characters. The account is you - your email address and password. A character is someone you play. Characters belong to the game world they were made in; your account works everywhere.

Do I have to verify my email address?

If the server has email configured, yes - you will need to click the link we send before you can create a character or enter the world. It exists so that you can actually recover your account later, which matters more than it sounds when you have put months into a character.

The verification link is good for three days. If it expires, the character-select screen has a button to send you a new one.

I did not get the email

Check your spam folder first. If it is not there, use the resend button on the character-select screen - there is a short cooldown between sends, so wait a minute if it does not seem to do anything. Still nothing? Get in touch and we will sort it out.

I have forgotten my password

Use the “Forgot password” link on the login screen. We will email you a link that is good for 24 hours and can only be used once. If you signed up with Google and never set a password, use that same flow to create one - you will need a password to play over telnet.

Can I sign in with Google?

Where it is enabled, yes. Your Google email becomes your account email. If you already have an account with that address, signing in with Google links to it rather than creating a second one.

Telnet needs a password, so if you only ever use Google sign-in and then want to connect over telnet, set a password first using the “Forgot password” flow.

Can I change my character’s name?

Not for free, and not in game. Character renames will be available from the store. Your account’s own username and email address can be changed from your account page.

Can I have more than one character?

Yes. Play them as different people - that is the point of them.

What happens if I delete my account?

Your characters go with it, and this cannot be undone. If you are leaving over something we could fix, tell us first - we would rather fix it.

Is my password stored safely?

Passwords are hashed with bcrypt and never stored in a form anyone can read, including us. We will never ask you for your password - not in game, not by email, not on a support ticket. Anyone who does is not us.
