Play in your browser
Nothing to install. The web client gives you the game text plus a map, health and mana gauges, a chat panel and a command history - and it works on a phone. Make an account, create a character, and you are in.
Open the web clientMudlet
Mudlet is a free, cross-platform MUD client, and the richest way to play Starfire. We ship a package for it with vitals gauges, a live area map, a room-occupants panel coloured by whether something is friendly, and tabbed chat.
- Install Mudlet and create a new profile.
- Set the address to
telnet.starfiremud.com and the port to 4000, then connect. - The package installs itself. The server offers it as soon as Mudlet connects, and re-offers it whenever we publish an update - so you never have to think about versions.
Prefer to install it by hand? Download the package and drag it onto the Mudlet window, or use Package Manager → Install.
Download Starfire.mpackagePlain telnet
Any telnet client works, on any operating system, with no package and no setup. This is the oldest way to play a MUD and it is fully supported - the login, the world and every command are identical to the browser client.
telnet telnet.starfiremud.com 4000
Windows does not ship a telnet client enabled by default; PuTTY (choosing the Telnet connection type) or Windows Terminal with a telnet client installed both work. On macOS and Linux, use nc telnet.starfiremud.com 4000 if telnet is not present.
Your character goes with you
One account, one set of characters. Log in from the browser on the train and from Mudlet at home and it is the same character standing in the same room - the world remembers where you were.
